Discovered by the Portuguese in 1418, the atlantic island of Porto Santo is the "little sister" of the Madeira Island, located at about 500 kms from the african west coast. With a total population of 5.000 inhabitants, Porto Santo is still a well kept secret where times goes by slowly and stressless.
The mild climate all year round makes of Porto Santo a desirable destination both in Winter and in Summer. The temperatures never drop too low in winter, staying around the 21 degrees celsius, and never rising too high during the summer, ocasionaly reaching 26 degrees celsius. The warming sun shines almost all year and the rainy days are extremely rare.

Porto Santo is also known as the "Golden Island" due to the golden colour of its sand, covering the 9 kms of the south coast of the Island. The blue of the sea and the temperature of the sea waters make this beach the prime atraction for many visitors.
Vila Baleira is the name of the main locality of the island. Facing the sea, the village has a rythm of its own, inviting the visitors for stroll through its narrow roads and squares. The original sidewalks and the well preserved facades are a few of the attractions of the village where one can visit the House of Colombo, who lived in Porto Santo for a few years.

Anreisebeschreibung:

Access to Porto Santo can be made by plane from Lisbon, Oporto or Funchal, or by ferry boat from Madeira Island.
The flight from Lisbon takes about 90 minutes and from Funchal only 15 minutes. The boat crossing between the two islands, a pleasant combination of transportation with a mini atlantic cruise, takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
